Kazan is the capital Tatarstan, a Republic of the Russian Federation.  It is located eight hundred kilometers to the east of Moscow, in the area between the Volga and the Ural Mountains. The local people, known as Tatars, have their own language, culture and traditions but the Soviet empire intertwined Russian influences and populations in the region.
